GALLOWAY RECYCLE SPORTIVE - the ROUTES         

 

Galloway ReCycle Sportive Routes

 

 

Start and finish for all routes is the Kirkcudbright Church Hall in St Mary Street  and will be clearly marked and marshalled.

There is a choice of three routes: 81 miles which includes a 10 mile gravel section , 67 miles and a shorter 30 mile route.

Feed stations will be set up along the routes and food will also be available at the finish.

Every entrant will receive a certificate showing his/her finishing time.

Support vehicles  will be on patrol in case of problems.

Registration is at Kirkcudbright Church Hall:

For the long and medium distance routes registration will open at 0745, with riders starting between 0830 and 0900.

For the short route registration will open at 0900, with riders starting between 0930 and 1000.

Finish cut off time is 1700 at Kirkcudbright Church Hall.

Broom wagon will pick up stragglers if required.

 

Long Route (81 miles): Includes gravel section   Route on Strava 

 

 

From the start in Kirkcudbright (caution) follow the B727 north east through Gelston bearing left signposted Dalbeattie joining the A745 at Buittle where turn left into Castle Douglas. Right at the roundabout (caution) then immediate left at the pedestrian crossing. Forward at the next crossroad through Clarebrand then down (caution) to Old Bridge of Urr where you turn left when joining the B794 then left again when joining the A712. Continue through Corsock and Balmaclellan to join the A713 (caution) at Ken Bridge turn right and then immediately left into New Galloway. In the town centre turn right (caution) onto the A762, left at Glenlee (by the bridge) then left again up the hill before the Power Station. Turn right onto the A712 and Queens Way riding passed Clatteringshaws Loch (café and refreshments available) Whilst passing the dam on your RHS turn left at the bottom of the hill following signs for Forest Drive, this is the start of the 9 mile gravel section. Finishing the gravel section turn right onto the A762 to Laurieston. At Laurieston turn left onto the B795, crossing the bottom of Loch Ken at Glenlochar to turn right on to the A713 (caution) into Castle Douglas (café and refreshments available). Right in the town centre out alongside Carlingwark Loch left passing Threave House entrance and on to Gelston. Across the crossroads and down to join the A711, turn right and follow on through Auchencairn and Dundrennan with fabulous views over the Solway with the mountains of the Lake District in the distance and finish back in Kirkcudbright.

 

Medium Route (67 miles):

From the start in Kirkcudbright (caution) follow the B727 north east through Gelston bearing left signposted Dalbeattie joining the A745 at Buittle where turn left into Castle Douglas. Crossing the bottom of Loch Ken at Glenlochar to turn right on to the A713 (caution) into Castle Douglas (café and refreshments available). Right in the town centre out alongside Carlingwark Loch left passing Threave House entrance and on to Gelston. Across the crossroads and down to join the A711, turn right and follow on through Auchencairn and Dundrennan with fabulous views over the Solway with the mountains of the Lake District in the distance and finish back in Kirkcudbright.

 

Short route (30 miles):

From the start in Kirkcudbright (caution) follow the B727 north east through Gelston bearing left signposted Castle Douglas. Turn left opposite the Douglas Arms Hotel and left again alongside Carlingwark Loch, left passing Threave House entrance and on to Gelston. Across the crossroads and down to join the A711, turn right and follow on through Auchencairn and Dundrennan with fabulous views over the Solway with the mountains of the Lake District in the distance and finish back in Kirkcudbright.

 

Road Safety - Danger Areas around the Course

Take care when:

Riding through the town centre to the start

Entering the Roundabout in Castle Douglas

Descending into the Old Bridge of Urr and turning left onto the B749

Descending to the A713 past Balmaclellan

Turning right in New Galloway onto the A762 (long route riders)

Descending from Gelston down to the A711 - narrow road – blind corners

Descending on the A711 down to Kirkcudbright Bay - fast road.
